Plant Shutdown Checklist for Surplus Propane Storage Tanks
When a manufacturing plant, utility, propane terminal or industrial facility closes, large propane and LPG storage vessels may need to be addressed before the property is handed over. This planning checklist helps facility managers organize the information needed for a potential tank sale. It is not an operating, decommissioning or safety procedure.

1. Identify Who Controls the Equipment and the Site
Confirm who owns each vessel, who is authorized to discuss its sale, and which facility contact can coordinate an evaluation. Note any lease, lien, contract or property-transfer questions for the appropriate parties to resolve before an agreement.
2. Build a Vessel Inventory
For each tank, record an internal identifier, site location, approximate capacity and dimensions, manufacturer, year of construction, prior contents and current operating status. Photograph the full vessel, its supports, accessible data plate or permanent markings, and surrounding area. Record uncertainty rather than guessing at specifications.
For common large-vessel sizes, review our information on 18,000-gallon, 30,000-gallon and 60,000-gallon industrial propane tanks. These pages explain the kinds of specifications buyers may request; confirm the actual capacity from the vessel records or markings rather than estimating from photographs.
3. Locate Available Records
Gather available ASME manufacturer data reports (such as U-1 or U-1A), National Board information, inspection records, drawings and equipment history. These documents can help with evaluation; missing records do not automatically prevent an inquiry. A previous service or pressure rating by itself does not establish suitability for reuse or conversion to another product.
4. Record Schedule and Access Constraints
Identify the planned shutdown date, property-transfer deadline, access restrictions, other work occurring nearby and the person responsible for coordinating contractors. Note whether tanks remain in service or contain product. Do not disconnect, vent, enter, lift or prepare a pressure vessel based on this checklist; those activities require qualified personnel, an approved plan and applicable safety and regulatory controls.
When a Plant Converts From Propane to Natural Gas
A facility that no longer needs its bulk propane standby system may have one or more large horizontal storage vessels available for sale. Before contacting Atlantic Tank Sales, identify whether the tanks will remain in service during the conversion, when the equipment could be released, and who can approve its sale. Share the vessel capacities, previous contents, photographs and available records. We can evaluate a potential purchase before the final retirement date, with any agreed removal coordinated only for tanks we buy.
5. Request a Direct Purchase Evaluation Before the Deadline
Atlantic Tank Sales purchases qualifying large industrial storage tanks directly from owners. An early inquiry allows time to review the vessel information and discuss possible purchase and removal arrangements. We coordinate agreed recovery, dismantling, rigging, loading and removal for tanks we purchase; we do not offer standalone tank disposal. All proposals and work scopes depend on the individual equipment and facility.

Once you have the tank count, approximate capacities, facility location, photographs and expected retirement date, the next step is to send your surplus tank information to Atlantic Tank Sales. You can start an inquiry even if some data plate records are not yet available. Please mention any site-access deadlines or restrictions so we can assess the potential purchase and removal timing.
